Big Al Joins The Team
|
The band now need to improve its overall sound, how better than to get on board a good sound engineer. The band welcomes Big Al - a good friend, excellent sound engineer and an outstanding multi instrumentalist/musician in his own right. Al is the 6th member of the band - he not only brings his immediate skills to improve our overall sound but many other ideas to improve the band generally. |
A Change In Bass Player
Just as the band had re-adjusted to a change at the front - Kenny, on bass and vocals, decides he needs a new challenge. Our friends in 'Rehab' had offered Kenny the role of front man and he duly accepts ... After auditions we are joined by Tony, ex 'Robbers Dog' - a mean bass player and vocalist who is a long time friend of the band. After a minimal number of practice sessions we are ready to gig - we start a month early in May 07. Our thanks and best wishes go out to Kenny in his new venture ... |
All Change At The Front
| Its August of 2006 and its all change at the front - Brian our vocalist has decided to emigrate to Scotland, he will be difficult to replace as a musician and a friend. The usual adverts are placed and the word goes out - we need someone special who can take the band forward, good presence, good voice and with the same vision. Dave (Ex Robbers Dog front man) has been back in the area for 18 months. An approach is made and he is keen - after a brilliant audition he is invited to join the band. This appointment will add a new dynamic, Dave not only sings but plays a mean guitar which will open new musical avenues. |
A New Groove Master
| Its the summer of 2005 and our first major change. After 3 years of having a stable line up and Mike our Groove Master & drummer leaves for pastures new. Although a blow to the band we are prepared to re-adjust and look to continue with a replacement. With adverts placed in local publications and a good root around local musicians we short list 2 players. We were looking for not only a good player but one that shares our vision and fits in at a personal level. Denny, our new drummer, joins the band in June 2005. An experienced ex-professional player who not only drums but has a powerful vocal harmony. At the end of an 8 week practice regime and Denny debuts at the Newcastle Packet on Friday 23 September. So the next chapter begins ... |
And Then There Was Red Eyed Rick
| Late 2004 and Kenny has an arm injury that forces him to pull out of the band for approximately 2 months - fortunately the The Pulse are able to enlist the help of Red Eyed Rick, an experienced campaigner who quickly slots into the line up and allow us to fulfil most of our commitments. Thanks Rick ... |
In The Beginning
| In early summer of 2001 Scarborough saw the demise of two local cover bands - 'Foolish Hearts' and 'Robbers Dog'. Both bands were five piece of experienced musicians who's musical direction, differences and work commitments finally took their toll. From the debris saw three of those musicians pull together to form what was to become 'The Pulse'. |
| 'Foolish Hearts' were an established Scarborough covers bands formed in 1997. Originally a four piece based around the two guitars, singer/bass and drums format they played rock covers from the likes of the Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams. Powerful vocals and melodic guitars proved to be very popular locally. 1999 saw a significant change - the loss of a guitarist, singer/bassist and the subsequent recruitment of a new singer, bassist and keyboards. The band had expanded to a five piece with a new musical direction - soul music. Eighteen months down the line and at their peak of popularity the band imploded leaving a diary full of cancelled booking. A sad end to what was a very good and popular local band. |

'Robbers Dog' were less main stream. Evolving from a duo in the mid 1990s they slowly built up a solid local fan base then started to recruit additional personel - drums and guitar initially then keyboards. Their reportoire was very much electric folk/soft rock that attracted more of a cult following. Add to that the fact that they performed only periodically and the result was packed venues whenever they played. Unfortunately 2001 saw changing work commitments within the band which lead to its eventual disbandment. |
| September of 2001 brought the guitarist and bass player from 'Foolish Hearts' and the keyboard player from 'Robbers Dog' together. Auditions for a vocalist initially proved fruitless until the ex 'Sabien' vocalist agreed to come onboard - that left the drummer. Within days a local session drummer was hooked and subsequently recruited - with the players in place, common ground for material to be played agreed and 'The Pulse' was born. |
